Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR)
popularly known as the Toy Train, is a narrow-gauge (2 feet) railway and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is celebrated for its 19th-century engineering, vintage steam locomotives, and scenic routes through the Eastern Himalayas.
1. Key Experiences & Routes
- Joy Ride (Most Popular): A 2-hour round trip from Darjeeling to Ghoom and back.
- Stops: Includes a 10-minute photo stop at the Batasia Loop and a 25-30 minute visit to the DHR Ghoom Museum (entry included in the ticket).
- NJP to Darjeeling (Full Journey): A ~88 km legendary route from the plains of New Jalpaiguri (NJP) to Darjeeling.
- Duration: Approximately 7–8 hours one-way.
- Engine: Typically hauled by a diesel locomotive.
- Jungle Safari: A round-trip from Siliguri Junction to Rongtong through the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, usually available during peak tourist seasons.
2. Engineering Marvels
- Batasia Loop: A giant spiral where the train makes a 360-degree turn to negotiate a steep 140-foot descent, offering panoramic views of Mt. Kanchenjunga and Darjeeling town.
- Zigzags (Reverses): The track uses 6 zigzags to gain elevation where loops were not possible.
- Ghoom Station: The highest railway station in India and the second highest in the world to be reached by a steam locomotive (altitude: 7,407 ft).
